چکیده

The Textbook of Contraceptive Practice is a current overview of population control. The authors are John Peel, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of Hull and Malcolm Potts, Director of Medical Studies, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Individual chapters cover the various methods: the oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices, withdrawal, diaphragm, spermicides, safe period, sterilization and abortion. Each method is described in detail with respect to its mode of action, suggestions for its optimal use by the patient, its effectiveness and side effects. Additional chapters consider the population explosion, the history of contraception, and medical, ethical, and legal aspects. This scope and the inclusion of recently recognized side effects of the oral contraceptives make this book unique. The oral contraceptives seem to be responsible for an increased incidence of thromboembolic phenomena, abnormal glucose tolerance curves and increased serum lipids. (Hypertension should be added to this list.) The book is clearly and well written. The small size and large print of the book (also available as a paperback) prevent in-depth documentation; selected references are provided. The authors summarize complex problems accurately and, in general, their opinions are reasonable. With the information presently available, the authors conclude that the woman who takes oral contraceptives has a greater likelihood of being alive one year later than the woman who chooses to have a baby or use some less effective method of contraception. This book should be of interest and value to everyone concerned with women. In the opinion of Dr. Alan Guttmacher, author of an earlier standard text in this field and president of Planned-Parenthood World Population, "Textbook of Contraceptive Practice is a splendid book. It is the sanest and clearest presentation of the topic I have ever read." ARNOLD EISENFELD

Comparison of IOL--master and ultrasound biometry in preoperative intra ocular lens (IOL) power calculation.

Postoperative refractive outcome largely depends on the accuracy of calculating power of implanted IOL. Lens power calculation can be done by conventional ultrasound biometry and partial coherence laser interferometry (IOL Master). The aim was to compare the accuracy of IOL power calculations using conventional ultrasound biometry and partial coherence laser interferometry.40 eyes were included...

مقایسه دو روش بیومتری التراسوند (Ultrasound) و لنستار (Lenstar) در تعیین طول محور چشم و میزان عیب انکساری پس از عمل جراحی کاتاراکت

Background and Objective: Ocular biometry refers to the measurement of the axial length of the eye and thickness of the intraocular structures. This process is routinely performed for all patients before cataract surgery. The accuracy of the biometric data is directly associated with the refractive status after cataract surgery. Currently, two methods of biometry, namely ultrasound and optical ...

Comparison of predictions made by the intraocular lens master and ultrasound biometry.

OBJECTIVE To ascertain whether a new instrument that uses partial coherence interferometry technology (Intraocular Lens Master [IOLm]) or ultrasound biometry provides a more accurate prediction of refractive outcomes in cataract surgery. METHODS This was a retrospective medical record review of 421 eyes of 304 patients who underwent cataract surgery with the IOLm and ultrasound biometry from ...

1 Multimodal Physiological Biometrics Authentication

The term biometry is derived from the Greek words ‘bios’ (life) and ‘metron’ (measure). In the broader sense, biometry can be defined as the measurement of body characteristics. With this non-technological meaning, this term has been used in medicine, biology, agriculture and pharmacy. For example, in biology, biometry is a branch that studies biological phenomena and observations by means of s...

Accuracy of intraocular lens power calculations using the Zeiss IOL master. A prospective study.

PURPOSE Partial Coherence Interferometry (PCI) is a fast, noncontact method to calculate lens implant power for cataract surgery. It has been reported as a potentially more accurate method than ultrasound biometry. Prospective study of the refractive outcomes of a consecutive series of patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery with preoperative biometry by both ultrasound A-scan and PCI. ...
